Ruth L. Stallknecht

 

 

Ruth L. Stallknecht graduated magna cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1977. She graduated from Hastings College of Law, University of California, where she earned the degree of Juris Doctor in 1980.

 

Ms. Stallknecht has been a member of the California State Bar since 1980 and has been admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Northern District. 

 

In 1981 she began specializing in workers' compensation defense with the Law Firm of Hoge, Fenton, Jones & Appel, Inc. She has been a principal of Haworth, Bradshaw, Stallknecht & Barber, Inc. since January 1, 1988. 

 

Ms. Stallknecht was a co-chairperson of the Workers’ Compensation Section in 1986 and 1987. She served on the Board of the Workers' Compensation Section of the Sacramento County Bar from 1995-1998. She has also been Chairperson of the Education Committee of the Sacramento County Bar Association from 1998-2000. She was the President of the CWCDAA in 2001-2002, as well as President of the NCWCDAA in 2006. 

 

Clark Barber

 

 

Clark Barber graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and philosophy.  He attended Lincoln University School of Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor degree in 1979.  He has been a certified specialist in workers' compensation since 1985.  He joined the Firm in 1990 as a principal.   

 

Mr. Barber is a certified specialist in workers' compensation, is an appointed pro tempore judge, certified self-insurance administrator, and on the statewide list of arbitrators for workers' compensation litigation. 

 

Casey W. Norris

 

Casey W. Norris graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983, with honors, and a Master's degree in state politics and policy in 1984, both from the University of California at Davis. While at McGeorge School of Law, he received various scholastic awards and was on the Dean’s Honor List from 1986 through 1990. In 1990, he received his Juris Doctor degree with distinction, graduating in the top 13% of his class. He joined the Firm in 1990 and is a member of the California State Bar and the Traynor Honor Society. Before attending law school, he worked for the California State legislature and for the U.S. Department of Defense. Mr. Norris is admitted to practice before all courts under the jurisdiction of California, the Eastern and Northern Districts of California, U.S. Federal Court, and is licensed to teach at the junior college level. Mr. Norris is a certified specialist in workers' compensation law, a principal of the Firm and currently manages the Firm’s Sacramento office. In 2017, he is listed among the 10 Best Workers’ Compensation Attorneys by the American Institute of Legal Counsel, and he is listed in the Northern California Super Lawyers publication from 2005 through 2016. Mr. Norris also serves as a member of the fundraising committee for Kids’ Chance California, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide need-based scholarships to the children of California workers who have been fatally or seriously injured on the job.  

 

Peter A. Viano
  

 

Peter A Viano is a principal of the Firm and practices in the San Jose office. He graduated from San Jose State University in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree with Great Distinction. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1990. At Santa Clara, he was an Emory Law Scholar and a member of the Santa Clara Law Review. After graduating, he was a Deputy District Attorney for Santa Clara County, prosecuting a variety of criminal offenses. He joined the Firm in 1992 and practices subrogation, workers' compensation, and subrogation in state and federal courts. In 2017, he is listed among the 10 Best Workers’ Compensation Attorneys by the American Institute of Legal Counsel and listed in the 2006, 2008-2009 publications of Northern California Super Lawyers. Mr. Viano currently serves as the CFO of the Firm. Mr. Viano is a certified specialist in workers’ compensation, is an appointed pro tempore judge, and on the statewide list of arbitrators for workers’ compensation litigation.

 

Linda B. Williams

  

 

Linda B. Williams graduated from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and human resources management.  From 1991 through 1992, she served as a full-time judicial extern for Magistrate Judge Patricia Trumbull in U. S. District Court, Northern District of California.  She graduated cum laude from the Santa Clara University School of Law in 1992 and began working for the Firm in November 1992.  She is a principal of the Firm in its San Jose office and currently serves as the Firm’s President. 

 

Gregory M. Pshide

  

 

Greg Pshide graduated from Whitman College in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics.After graduation, he was employed by Household Credit Services as a Senior Fraud Investigator in the credit card division. He graduated from McGeorge School of Law, where he earned the degree of Juris Doctor in 1998.Before joining the Firm in 1999, Mr. Pshide interned with the California Attorney General's office in the Department of Writs and Appeals.  He is admitted to practice before all courts under the jurisdiction of California and the Eastern District of California U.S. Federal Court.  Mr. Pshide is a principal of the Firm and currently manages the Firm’s Sacramento office

 

Darla L. Bava

 

Darla L. Bava graduated on the dean’s list from Modesto Junior College in 1992 with an Associate of Arts degree.  She obtained a Juris Doctor degree in 1997 from Humphrey’s School of Law.  She is a member of the State Bar of California and is licensed to practice before the Eastern District Court of California and Northern District Court of California.  

 

Ms. Bava has practiced civil litigation and workers’ compensation since 1997.  She joined the firm in 2003.  Since then, she has worked closely with the Monterey County Deputy District Attorney and its Investigation Unit to assist with criminal prosecutions and in obtaining restitution orders and sentencing concerning workers’ compensation fraud.  She has assisted employers and insurance carriers in obtaining numerous workers’ compensation fraud convictions in Monterey County, Merced County and Santa Clara County.  Ms. Bava is a principal of the Firm in its Salinas office and currently serves as the managing attorney for the Salinas office. 

 

Gia K. Schneider

 

 

Gia K. Schneider received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1993 and her Juris Doctor Degree from Boston University School of Law. She was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of California, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1999 and has practiced exclusively in the specialty area of workers’ compensation defense since that time. Before attending law school, Ms. Schneider worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Northern and Southern California.

Ms. Schneider is a member of the State Bar of California and has served as the Defense Co-Chair of the Santa Clara County Bar Association,Workers’ Compensation Division. She is a principal of the Firm and currently serves as the managing attorney for the San Jose office.

 

Christopher E. Martin

 

 

Chris Martin graduated from California State University, Sacramento, in 1994, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational communications. He also graduated from Lincoln Law School of Sacramento where he earned the degree of Juris Doctor in 1999. Prior to joining the firm, he was employed by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office and James International Law, Inc. He has also served as a Deputy District Attorney in the Amador County District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted workers’ compensation and insurance fraud cases. 

 

In 2008, he retired from the United States Air Force Reserves where he served in Operation Desert Shield and in the Persian Gulf War.  He is a member of the State Bar of California and is licensed to practice before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.  Mr. Martin is a certified specialist in workers’ compensation law.  He is a principal of the Firm.  You can find Mr. Martin listed in the 2009 publication of Northern California Super Lawyers. 

 

 

Nathan D. Shelub

 

Nathan D. Shelub graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004, with college honors, where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts in biology and psychology. He attended Thomas Jefferson School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 2007. Mr. Shelub is a principal of the Firm in its Salinas office.

 

Pearce Tucker

 

Pearce Tucker received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science with a minor in Pre-Law Thematic from the University of Arizona in 2006 and his Juris Doctor Degree from California Western School of Law in 2011. Mr. Tucker was admitted to practice law in the State of California in 2011. Mr. Tucker previously worked for a firm in San Diego specializing in business, real estate, employment and civil litigation. Before graduating from law school, Mr. Tucker gained experience working for the Attorney General for the District of Columbia, the California Department of Corporations Enforcement Division and several law firms. Mr. Tucker is an associate in our San Jose office.

 

Alaric F. Stein

 

Alaric Stein received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of California at Davis in 2013. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and was subsequently admitted to practice law in the State of California in 2016. During law school, Mr. Stein interned at the Superior Court of Santa Clara County for Judge William Monahan. Mr. Stein joined our Firm in 2017 and is an associate in our San Jose office.

 

Melissa L. Dempsey

 

Melissa Dempsey graduated from the University of California, Merced in 2011, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with a minor in Political Science. Ms. Dempsey then graduated magna cum laude from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego in 2014. During law school, Ms. Dempsey completed several internships with both civil and criminal firms. She also served as an Editor on the Thomas Jefferson Law Review while also acting as a research assistant to various professors. Before joining the firm, Ms. Dempsey served as a law clerk to the Honorable Presiding Judge Roberto C. Naraja of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Superior Court. Ms. Dempsey joined the firm in 2017 and is an associate in our Salinas office.

 

 

Vito S. Catanzaro

 

Vito S. Catanzaro graduated from San Diego State University in 2011, where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts in History. Mr. Catanzaro attended Monterey College of Law and graduated in 2016 with a Juris Doctor degree. During his time in law school, he served as a Law Clerk with the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted over 75 traffic infractions. Eventually, he became a permanent employee of the District Attorney’s Office, which lasted through the duration of law school. After graduating from Monterey College of Law, Mr. Catanzaro served as the Director of Legal Services for the YWCA Monterey County. Additionally, he has served on the City of Monterey Architectural Review Committee since 2017. Mr. Catanzaro joined our firm in 2017 and is an Associate in our Salinas office.

 

 

Rick T. Lebherz

 

Rick T. Lebherz graduated from Saint Mary's College of California, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, in 2005. He graduated from McGeorge School of Law in 2015, where he won the Witkin Award for receiving the highest grade in Compliance in the Health Care Industry. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Lebherz was employed by Blue Shield of California and The Central California Alliance for Health. Mr. Lebherz is a member of the State Bar of California and is licensed to practice before the Eastern District Court of California. Mr. Lebherz joined the firm in 2018 and is an Associate in our Sacramento Office.

 

 

Ashlee M. Gilliam

 

Ashlee M. Gilliam graduated from the University of California Riverside in 2011, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a concentration in Law and Society. Ms. Gilliam earned her Juris Doctor degree from UC Hastings College of the Law in 2016. She is a member of the California State Bar and is licensed to practice in all California state courts. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Gilliam interned at Kaiser Permanente, the California Attorney General’s Office and several law firms. She later worked at an employment law firm in various areas of workers’ compensation litigation, including Serious and Willful claims under Labor Code section 4553 and Petitions for Discrimination under Labor Code section 132a. Ms. Gilliam joined the firm in 2018 and is an associate in our Sacramento office.

 

 

Brett Hartmann

 

Brett Hartmann received his law degree from Monterey College of Law in May 2017 and was admitted to the California State Bar in June 2017. Prior to law school, Brett graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of California, San Diego in 2010. While in law school, he was a finalist for the Heisler Moot Court and was a Teaching Fellow for the Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure classes. Brett began working full time as a Paralegal in a workers’ compensation defense law firm during his second semester of law school in January 2014. Since graduating law school and passing the Bar exam, he has continued to work as an attorney exclusively in the field of workers’ compensation defense, including representing employers, insurance carriers and adjusting agencies on cases from inception to closure and representing defendants with Labor Code Section 132a, Serious and Willful and subrogation claims. Mr. Hartmann joined our Firm in 2018 and is an Associate in our Salinas office.
